Gratitude can have an amazing impact on mood, outlook, and day-to-day stress levels of family caregivers. As a caregiver, most of your daily life surrounds the needs of someone else in your household and it can be difficult to step back and gain a greater perspective.

Adopting a few simple gratitude practices to your life can help make your caregiving journey a more positive experience:

Make Gratitude Part of Your Daily Routine

Gratitude is one of those things that’s hardest to grasp for when you need it the most. So, instead of waiting for life to get rough, set aside a few minutes daily to take a mental inventory of all the things you can be thankful for in that moment. It can also be helpful to anchor your gratitude practice to something in your current routine like brushing your teeth or making coffee in the morning.

Start a Gratitude Journal

Journaling may be more of a commitment, but writing down things you are grateful for is a great way to keep perspective of your caregiving journey.

Spread Gratitude to Others

Your own capacity for gratitude expands when you actively share that gratitude with others. Reach out to friends or family and thank them for helping you with caregiving, or any other way they have contributed to your life.

Keep It Small and Simple

Gratitude is not all about the big things in life. Finding gratitude is as simple as giving thanks for a great cup of coffee, the sunlight in the morning, or a gentle breeze on a hot day. Being grateful for the small things, makes bigger wins (like your loved one having a good day) feel even better.

Get Support

Caregiving is not something anyone should do alone. One helpful means of caregiver support is online groups like our caregiver Facebook group, Caregiver Connection. It’s a place to foster community, encouragement and support among caregivers. In-home care is another great option to help lighten your caregiving load. You can hire a caregiver to come help just a few hours a week to give yourself some personal time or to handle errands, or you can hire someone to come on a daily basis.
